The Abbey Farm

In 1956-57 I was a choirboy in the Abbey church. I would often walk through the Abbey Farm, from the gateway along the path (top right of picture) to our new house in the Crooked Mile. The wall extended right around the Abbey Gardens so what was inside was a mystery but branches of pear and apple trees hung over the wall in places and we could often manage to pick some of the fruit. We called this \"scrumping\". Some of the men of the Bolden family worked at the farm. Big Jim Bolden often drove the tractor and us kids could get a ride on the trailer behind and throw swedes off for the cows. We also went potato gathering and filled sacks with potatoes from the freshly turned soil. At the end of the week the farmer paid us according to how many sacks we had filled. It was good pocket money.
